Natural gas is a natural fossil fuel, formed by the decomposition of animals, plants and microorganisms that were buried under mud and sand, in the depths of ancient lakes and oceans millions of years ago.
Being the hydrocarbon trapped by solid rock beneath the earth, prevented of any flow or scape, the deposits from where it is extracted were formed.
Natural Gas Characteristics
Is a mixture of different gases in varying amounts. Its main component is methane.
Between 35% to 40% lighter than air, meaning that it dissipates into the atmosphere in case of leakage, reducing the risk of explosion.
In its original state, natural gas is tasteless, colorless and odorless, therefore has no taste, color or odor. Therefore during the distribution phase a compound is added that allows people to detect their presence.
No poisoning occurs when inhaled. The reason is that none of its components (methane, ethane, nitrogen, carbon dioxide) is toxic.
Natural Gas Uses
Industries uses it as fuel in several types of machines and equipments.
In the petrochemical industry, is used as raw material in industries requiring methane -the main component of natural gas- in their processes.
Thermal power plants use the heat energy generated by the combustion of natural gas and convert it into electricity.
In domestic and businesses, is used for cooking and to jump-start heating water and atmosphere, clothes dryer, among other equipment.
The vehicles use it as fuel. The natural gas (GNV) is characterized by being economical, safe, efficient and environmentally friendlier than other fossil fuels.
